From jim at lang.hm Wed Nov 11 23:49:04 2009 From: jim at lang.hm (James E. Lang) Date: Wed, 11 Nov 2009 20:49:04 -0800 Subject: [Mulberry-discuss] Mulberry Mail (Windows) on Linux (Wine) Message-ID: <79E0691767AB1D40D430CA17@red-rover> Just a little different look at Mulberry Mail: I decided to take a look at what the Windows version of Mulberry Mail would do on a Linux system using Wine. I followed the following steps: 1) I downloaded the Windows version of Mulberry Mail to ~/Downloads.Mulberry.exe 2) I executed the downloaded file which installed Mulberry Mail into ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Mulberry/ 3) I executed ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Mulberry/Mulberry.exe 4) When asked for a Mail Spell Checking Dictionary, I selected "American English" 5) In the "Preferences: Default | Simple" box I supplied my Real Name, Email Address, User ID, Email Server, Server Type (IMAP) SMTP Server, Frequency to check for New Email, turned off Use Alert, defined my Signature, set to Login at Startup and defined the Hierarchy Separator (.) 6) When asked for my password on the IMAP server, I entered it 7) When asked, I chose my Mailbox Locations 8) Mulberry Mail connected to my IMAP server 9) When asked if I wanted to make Mulberry my default mail client, I responded, "No" 10) When asked if I wanted to make Mulberry my default calendar client, I responded, "No" 11) I did not like the fonts used to display my mailboxes, message headers, or message text so I used Alt+F, f to change my preferences selecting Advanced and Fonts and changed the font for lists. 12) After closing the preferences box I selected my INBOX which looks quite fine. At this point I have these observations to report: 1) The information in the preferences boxes is not truncated as it is in the native Linux version of Mulberry Mail. 2) On the Mulberry Mail menu bar the items are selectable by means of the keyboard contrary to what exists in the native Linux version. 3) The items in the Mulberry Mail menus use Ctrl, Alt, and Shift. With the native Linux version most of the items use Meta which is not a discernable key. 4) My first attempt to print a very short e-mail ran the page count over 600 before I cancelled the operation. My second attempt to print the same one line e-mail but with page numbers 1-5 printed 14 pages with headers and footers only (no message text) before I physically cancelled it at the printer. 5) Selecting the draft icon created an Unhandled Exception Unhandled exception: c0000005 At address 006f9e2f Saved 1 Drafts for recovery CrashDump.txt file written to: C:\Program I welcome any pointers that may be given with regard to finding that information. -- Jim > On Wed, 11 Nov 2009, James E. Lang wrote: > >> Date: Wed, 11 Nov 2009 20:49:04 -0800 >> From: James E. If you open Configure Wine from the menu, the first tab is Applications, and you can set the Windows parameters on a per-application basis. The only entry initally is Default, and at the bottom there is a drop-down box where you can pick the version of Windows to be compatible with. It's usual setting is XP. I haven't tried Mulberry in Wine, but there are a lot of apps that won't work well, or at all, under it. It's a long way from a completely compatible environment. You have a lot of options to use Windows DLLs instead of the Wine versions, which can help, this can be setup using the Library tab. There is also a useful program you can download called Winetricks (can't remember the URL, you'll need to Google it). This is an easy way to download and configure support for extra DLLs that aren't in Wine, etc. Rick From jness at d.umn.edu Thu Nov 12 13:21:21 2009 From: jness at d.umn.edu (Joel Ness) Date: Thu, 12 Nov 2009 12:21:21 -0600 Subject: [Mulberry-discuss] Best way to convert Mulberry addressbooks In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <1269CE13-8E4C-45CA-B3FD-A7D5EC9E8259@d.umn.edu> We are, unfortunately, moving away from Mulberry on our campus. We'll be turning off the IMSP service at the end of 2009. Some of our folks know that they can download the open source version and continue to use Mulberry, but it won't have the Mulberry magic of the prefs and addressbooks on the server, but we won't have official support. The main bottleneck is converting addressbooks. Mulberry has a variety of formats to export addresbooks. I'm creating instructions for people to export their addresbooks, but a lot of faculty and staff find it confusing and we're trying to make the process simpler. Mulberry does have the advantage to be able to export addressbooks without going to a user's office, but having to ask them to tell me their password isn't a very good practice (although most people don't care). And if they switch to use the newer Mulberry versions they'd still have to export and import they're addressbooks to a newer Mulberry. Group addresses don't export, other than clicking on the name of each group, copy, and paste them somewhere else. Does anyone know of a utilities that would convert the raw Mulberry addressbook to other formats. I've hunted0? I have access to our IMSP server and I can actually do some funky tricks to move one users's addressbook to one of my test accounts - and then export. But that's awkward and too many steps. Any ideas? Mulberry is still rock solid on the protocals and can handle some mailboxes that would choke the other email clients. Keep it rolling. ___________________________________________________ Joel Ness Information Technology Systems and Services 166D KPlz University of Minnesota Duluth (218) 726-8841 jness at d.umn.edu From frysinsp at jmu.edu Thu Nov 12 13:50:50 2009 From: frysinsp at jmu.edu (Dr. Steven P. I've exported/imported a few times, and groups worked. I used the PINE format, because the Pine email client also supports hierarchical groups (which is one of Mulberry's leading features in my opinion). My reasons for using Mulberry are the same as John's: I'm writing this over the midwest somewhere. I haven't yet run into the s/mime problem but I've had another, long-standing frustration with encryption: I wish I had an opportunistic mode like s/wan (used to) promote. If I turn on "encrypt" then I get an annoying warning for the 99% of my correspondents for whom I do not have a key, so each time I'm been reminded encryption is a good thing and resolve to use it, I turn it right off after I compose a message or two. Then I encrypt nothing. "Encrypt if possible" would be the optimal choice; be as secure as possible without being annoying. Closer to the theme of making Mulberry more convenient for frequently disconnected use, if I can't have asynchronous background synchronization, I'd like to have periodic synchronization (every 5 minutes or something) and perhaps a more convenient front-of-the-UI button for synchronizing with a single click. I know that's a some what POPpy usage mode, but some of us are denied by circumstance the benefit of permanent connectivity. DKIM does several interesting things, which may or may not be useful for some purposes, but it is not in any way a substitute for proper, signed-cert-based, message authenticity and integrity checks. If the Wikipedia S/MIME page even vaguely suggests that DKIM is an alternative, it is just wrong. PGP can be used to sign individual body parts, rather than the whole message, and that may be an alternative under some circumstances. However, what is signed and how (whether S/MIME or PGP signing whole messages, PGP signing body parts, or DKIM signing headers) is under the control of the sender. I've run into this issue at work. Mulberry sends signed messages as S/MIME type application/pkc7-signature (which, if I know anything about Cyrus, is probably the correct mime type for digital signatures.) The problem is that some MUAs don't know what that mime type is. Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=sha1; protocol="application/pkcs7-signature"; Outlook sends signed messages as mime type x-pkcs7-signature. I suspect (I haven't checked the RFC) that is the "old" way or an alternative way of sending sigs. Content-Type: multipart/signed; protocol="application/x-pkcs7-signature"; micalg=SHA1; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0AE9_01CA678A.D17194B0" If your MUA only "understands" x-pkcs7 and doesn't "understand" pkcs7, then you will encounter this problem, where you can't open a message that has been signed. Blackberrys, for example, exhibit this problem, so I have to remove my sig when I send to certain people here, because they primarily use their Blackberry to read email. As of today, Thawte certificates are being discontinued (all expired at once). They are offering a one-year Verisign cert as a substitute, but that cert says "identify not verified", making it little better than a self-signed one. For at least some of us, the obvious thing to do is to shift to CACert certificates, but those certs don't seem to get along with Mulberry. I've been able to install the certificates themselves so I can send mail, but trying to install the CA certificate in order to receive mail signed with such certs gets error messages about invalid formats and/or missing pointers to the PKCS 12 cert (which would seem to require CA private keys, and that isn't going to happen). Perhaps I just don't understand what to tell Mulberry. Any insights or suggestions would be welcome. john From iane at sussex.ac.uk Wed Nov 18 05:46:31 2009 From: iane at sussex.ac.uk (Ian Eiloart) Date: Wed, 18 Nov 2009 10:46:31 +0000 Subject: [Mulberry-discuss] Another S/MIME issue In-Reply-To: <039B2B15064BFE9CAFDB6606@PST.JCK.COM> References: <039B2B15064BFE9CAFDB6606@PST.JCK.COM> Message-ID: <8D983274EA376C87D70DEA23@lewes.staff.uscs.susx.ac.uk> --On 17 November 2009 16:12:44 -0500 John C Klensin wrote: > Hi. > > As of today, Thawte certificates are being discontinued (all > expired at once).
