I recently sent a link to a Yahoo mailing list and an AOL reader reported that she had to manually strip off the angle brackets or it wouldn't work. This wasn't true for all web-based email clients, but it was for some, since in HTML what is between angle brackets isn't seen. I don't know whether this is still a problem. I don't know whether it's still true, but in the past they couldn't deal with a plain link with or without angle brackets. They had to have something like this: http://www.motivatedphotos.com in order to have the link be live. I still see some places give a link and then give it again in this more extended format "for AOL recipients," so perhaps it's still the case. I can see how a poorly-coded web client would do that. It would also be a security and spam nightmare, since it "trusts" the HTML one is including in the email. I do recall a problem I had in the distant past with Yahoo's web-based client. I sent a test message to my own Yahoo account and found its reader was including the trailing angle bracket in the URL, making it invalid to the site that sent it. (It was the registration confirmation email for a web forum.) I wasn't able to find a problem report page anywhere at Yahoo where I could complain about it. I ended up just disallowing signups from Yahoo, and advised interested parties to go get a Gmail account, instead.
